長年多くのロックのライブを経験してきて、日本は面白く可笑しいが、すぐに違和感がなくなるようなバンドを多く輩出していることがわかった。もし私がSXSWのスケジュールを見間違えていなかったら、東京から来た３人の女性ハードロックバンド、BO-PEEPを見る事はなかっただろう。運がよかった。BO-PEEPの荒々しく効果的なリフは、それがぶっきらぼうなワンコードの力強い乱打だろうと、調和しないメタルのラインだとしても、パンクのように鳴り響かせていても、冗談めいた所などなかった。

ボーカルはヨーコ・オノ風の震え声で英語だったとは思うが、何を言っているのか理解はできなかった。しかし、それは問題では無い。BO-PEEPはどんなアメリカやイギリスのサイケデリックなバンドや激しいバンドと並んでも負け劣りしない、そしてそうあるべきだ。

The PV for Levelload’s ‘Yellow Fever’ has been selected as one of the best music videos of 2008 – and we haven’t even released it yet! The video, which was completed just a few weeks ago, depicts a humorous tale of lust, jealousy and robotic malfunction, animated in glorious lo-fi, and has been picked up by New York club promoter GBH.

　最初にBO-PEEPを知ったのは、確かちょうど２年ほど前。初めて聴いた『Is it good for you?!!』は、そのパンク＆ラウドなスタイルが非常に新鮮だった。新鮮というのは、いわゆるジャパニーズ・ガールズ・バンドの枠から完全にはみ出した、圧倒的に規格外のバンドだったからだ。いわゆるキュートさとは無縁の（失礼）エッジの効いた３ピース。ささくれだったギター・ノイズに、どっしりしたリズムが鳴る。乱暴だが、こう、鳴らさなくてはどうしようもない衝動が、確かにそこにはあったのだ。

このバンドの魅力は、そういう衝動にある、と言っていい。どのバンドもそこから音を産み出しているが、彼女らは、よりダイレクトである。結成から８年。その衝動は薄れることなく、さらに強くなってきている。
それは最新作『SICK ORANGE TELEVISION』からも明らかだ。今作は、メンバーの姫井順子が産休中のため、VOLA AND THE ORIENTAL MACHINEの有江嘉典がベーシストとして参加。プロデュースおよび作曲も行なっている。そのためか、彼女らの持つパンク＆ラウドなバンド・サウンドが強調された。同時にここ１年で、姫井の休業も含め、バンドをどうしていくか考えさせられたことが、楽曲に覚悟を与えている部分もある。「Spiral Revolution」での＜脱線したシナリオから生み出したプロローグ＞といったフレーズからは、そういう気持ちを強く感じることが出来る。
　再生と覚悟、そこから来る衝動。これほど強いものはない。BO-PEEPはそれを手にした。あとはギターをかき鳴らし、強烈なリズムにのせて、叫ぶだけだ。そのヒリヒリする瞬間を体感したい。姫井が復帰した後も、彼女らはさらに強烈な音を鳴らしてくれるだろう。

The first time I heard Bo-Peep was about two years ago.

I found them so fresh – their album “Is It Good For You?!!’ was punkish and loud. I say “fresh” because they were totally unlike the stereotype of a Japanese girl band, and outrageously unique. They are a 3-piece band, with little regard for appealing to notions of cuteness. They blast edgey, noisy guitar over a heavy, roaring rhythm.

It sounds rough, but that’s absolutely the way it should sound. A sound like this can only come from a deep hunger.

Such hunger is fascinating. Of course, all bands thrive on hunger when shaping their sound, but Bo-Peep are more direct.

Since the band formed eight years ago, this hunger has not faded; rather, it has deepened ever further. Their latest album, ‘Sick Orange Television’, proves that. Bassist Junko Himei was away on maternity leave for the recording; substitute Arie Yoshinori (Vola & The Oriental Machine) filled in on more than just basslines, contributing to the writing of the album and even producing it. Perhaps this is the reason for the emphasized punkishness and loudness of their sound.

At the same time, the fact that the band had to contemplate a period without Junko seems to have affected the sound, making it all the more urgent. Such a feeling becomes obvious when you hear lyrics such as “The prologue attached to a scenario that’s gone off the rails,” as sung (in Japanese) on the song ‘Spiral Revolution’.

Regeneration and readiness. And the hunger that comes from within. That’s as strong as nothing else. Now Bo-Peep have that. So all they can do is smash their guitars and shout with intense rhythm. I want to feel the stinging moment. And of course, they are bound to become all the more extreme once Junko returns.
